・Summary
Air quality is crucial for human survival, and air pollution from human activities is a significant environmental issue. Pollutants from traffic-related emissions, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate matter (PM), have a significant impact on human health. In Europe and the United States, motor vehicles are the main contributors to air pollution. In Nigeria, motorcycle sales have been growing at double-digit rates, causing increased emissions from internal combustion engines (ICEs) that burn petrol or other fossil fuels. This has led to poor outdoor and indoor air quality. The alarming increase in motorcycle usage as an alternative means of transportation in Nigeria, with a population of around 170 million and over 10 million Nigerians using motorcycles and tricycles, highlights the need for better understanding of the pollutants linked to motorized transportation. The national greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector in 1994 were 38473.4 Gg of CO2, 12.07 Gg of CH4, 322.47 Gg of NOx, 4728.99 Gg of CO, and 0.866 Gg for N2O.
